What is Christian Education?
God is the source of all knowledge and truth.
As the Author and Sustainer of all Creation, God is central to the understanding
of history, literature, mathematics, science, and every other academic
discipline. Thus, in studying these subjects, we ought to heed His perspective,
as found in His Word, and respond with lives that give Him the honor
and praise He is due.
Therefore, Providence offers a Christ-centered
education, deeply rooted in the Scriptures. All subjects are presented
from a Biblical worldview, and all teaching is integrated around the
revealed Word of God.
A Biblical worldview is the understanding of
God's perspective on all disciplines and an understanding of the biblical
timeline - Creation, Fall, and Redemption.
Nancy Pearcey, who co-authored How Now Shall
We Live? With Chuck Colson, points out the contrast with what we see
as Christian education and what goes on in many so-called "Christian
schools":
"In many Christian
schools, the typical strategy is to inject a few narrowly defined
'religious' elements into the classroom, like prayer and Bible memorizationand
then teach exactly the same things as the secular schools. The curriculum
merely spreads a layer of spiritual devotion over the subject matter
like icing on a cake, while the content itself stays the same"..."Christian
education is not simply a matter of starting a class with Bible reading
and prayer, then teaching subjects out of secular textbooks."
At Providence, our students will spend time
praying, and reading, memorizing, and discussing God's Word, but Pearcey
communicates what we mean by Christian education when she writes: "Christian
education consists of teaching everything, from science to mathematics
to literature and the arts, within the framework of an integrated worldview.
It means teaching students to relate every academic discipline to God's
truth and His self-revelation in Scripture, while detecting and critiquing
non-biblical worldview assumptions."
